Day per page idea: schedule and journal space

I like to toy with the idea of using my day per page diary as a planner + journal. My daily book is with me all the time so it's a natural place to capture those memories before they escape.

Currently I'm using my Quo Vadis Notor, which I like because the schedule is at the top and out of the way so I can use the lines below for lists and journaling.

My new 2013 Moleskine Magenta large daily planner is so pretty, it got me thinking on how I could use it next year. With the larger page size I could have a column at the left to see my entire day chronologically, have a space to the right for to-dos, and still have a large area of the page for journaling (click on photo for a better view):

I probably wouldn't even actually draw the lines, but just use these areas in this way.

I admit this setup is a lot like the format in the Quo Vadis ABP1, which has a timed column at the left and the rest of the daily page lined for notes and lists.  But really you could use any day per page planner in this way.

Does anyone else like to journal or jot memories directly onto your planner/ diary pages?

  1. I journal in my planner all the time. That is one reason I like the weekly format of the moleskine so much. With a daily planner, I found myself having a lot of days when I would write nothing and then one day I wouldn't have enough space.

But even though I've made the weekly format work for me and I love how I've color coordinated it, I still toy with the idea of going back to the daily layout.

    1. April I also tend to have empty days in my day per page planner. When my kids were smaller I had something to write every day, but now I tend to go for days at a time without writing anything. The events tend to be bigger and farther apart. I'm wondering if I should start an undated notebook as my journal instead.

  2. Not enough room. I don't really keep a log book at all, just journal my thoughts about stuff. I do have you to thank, Laurie, for getting me going again as I have managed to write every single day in the daily Moleskine I won on your giveaway. Hope to continue that next year with an undated book like I used to do. My planner is a few appointments and lots and lots of lists so I don't forget anything I need to do. Because of both home and work circumstances I can't "schedule" to dos, just have a running list to work on as I can. And I carry my journal too so I can write randomly when I get time (but at least daily).

    1. Mstraat I'm so glad you're enjoying your daily Moleskine!

Are you still using the Taskmaster at work? With a weekly that big you don't need a separate logbook, you can log it all in the weekly. So much space in that one!

  3. I've developed the habit of using the notes page of my day on two pages planner to journal. I take notes there too during the day, and at the end of the day I summarize the day briefly; accomplishments, events, notable weather, etc.

    1. Now see, this is my ideal situation for a planner + journal. I have my planner with me all the time so I can write in it on the go, and it ends up being a great snapshot of my days.

Maybe I should do what Mstraat does and use a separate journal book, but carry it with me everywhere. That would be interesting to jot things in throughout the day. Somewhere I read of someone who does this, kind of like Tweets to herself throughout the day, and it's fun to look back on.

  4. Hi Laurie, I love your blog - I've gotten a lot of ideas from here! This is what I currently do with one extra tweak. I only use January through June as a planner and the other 6 months I use as blank note pages. Then I have another large mole where I fill in things for July through December and will use the first 6 months as note pages. This way when I'm out I can jot anything down in the same book.

  5. I don't, but you already know that :) I find it uncomfortable to have day-to-day appointments mixed in with my thoughts and experiences. But then, that's just me! I have my Filofax for planner needs, a Moleskine week-to-view for daily thoughts and then a notebook for proper journalling. I like my system this way :)
